Declare Victory and Go Home

Declare Victory and Go Home

There was a lot of chatter in the news and amongst journalists this past week on how we get out of the war in Iran. One option, my favorite, was offered last but not least in the New York Times: “declare victory and go home.” That certainly beats endless ceasefire deals or madly, insanely bombing Iran into oblivion.

About politics and war, a brilliant historical novelist, Gore Vidal, once wrote, “We are permanently the United States of Amnesia.” I later heard him go on to lament in conversation – the American public has a memory that lasts about six weeks. We should have declared victory in Vietnam, he said, and immediately had a ticker-tape parade down Fifth Avenue in New York to celebrate.

Now that would be an end the war strategy to vote on by November.
