At West Virginia University, I spoke about the enduring role of journalism in supporting democratic systems. While platforms and consumption habits continue to evolve, the core responsibility remains the same: delivering accurate, fact-based reporting that
informs the public.

Local news organizations are central to this mission. As coverage declines in many communities, access to reliable information becomes increasingly limited. Strengthening local reporting capacity is therefore not just important, it’s essential.
Journalism also plays a critical role in facilitating civil discourse. By presenting verified information clearly and consistently, it helps foster understanding across differing viewpoints.
The path forward depends on sustained investment in local journalism, accountability in coverage, and a continued commitment to serving communities with clarity, compassion, and accuracy.
