The Power and Responsibility of the Press: A Conversation at USC Annenberg

Last Thursday morning, I had a great experience with Geoffrey Cowan’s lecture class at the University of Southern California, talking about The Power and Responsibility of the Press and how technology and the business of journalism have exploded in America and around the world.

One of the most rewarding parts of the morning was meeting a bright and diverse group of graduate students preparing for careers in journalism and reporting across an array of disciplines – from investigative and international journalism to sports and beyond. Their curiosity, engagement, and commitment to the profession were energizing and a reminder of how important it is to invest in the next generation of journalists.

It was also cool to share ideas with colleagues and friends Ben Sherwood, Kevin Merida, Gerard Ryle, and Geoff. We had a wide-ranging discussion about the state of news today, the forces reshaping the industry, and the ways journalism is reaching younger audiences where they are – embracing new platforms, formats, and technologies.

We also had the opportunity to tour USC Annenberg’s facilities, which could rival those of any professional newsroom today. From television studios and a sophisticated control room to podcasting facilities and other state-of-the-art production spaces, the school is providing its students with best-in-class tools and training.

It was an inspiring morning – not only to reflect on where journalism has been and where it is headed, but to see firsthand the talented young people who will help shape its future.
