There was a lot of chatter in the news and amongst journalists this past week on how we get out of the war in Iran. One option, my favorite, was offered last but not least in the New York Times: “declare victory and go home.” That certainly beats endless ceasefire deals or madly, insanely bombing […]
Ransom is Daniel Silva’s 13th New York Times #1 best seller this week. He is the American John le Carré, the spy novelist of our lifetime. Yep, he’s that good… Full disclosure: he and his wife, Jamie Gangel, the award-winning CNN Washington correspondent, are great friends. Danny was also a serious reporter, a former Middle […]
Here’s a quick update on my PBS series, Breaking the Deadlock. Our latest episode, “How To Fix an Election,” dropped last July 7th, and brings together an outstanding group of voices, including Mark Cuban, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, NYU law professor and MS Now contributor Melissa Murray, former U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, and […]

As he once said, “I guess I have a gift for creating families.” He certainly did. Our friendship grew from a few serendipitous summers in Lake Placid, where his daughter competed in the […]
Graduation week is a time for reflection. Over the past six months, I visited journalism schools including the University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin, West Virginia University, and NYU, where I met talented students committed to making a difference. One memorable encounter was with two students from Jackson, Mississippi, planning to spend summer from Delta, […]
I recently reflected on Ted Turner’s remarkable legacy after seeing a photo of him beneath a headline celebrating his impact on television. Ted revolutionized news through CNN, proving audiences wanted around-the-clock coverage. His vision inspired many of us, including my efforts to help launch MSNBC. Beyond his professional achievements, I fondly remember an evening at […]
At West Virginia University, I spoke about the enduring role of journalism in supporting democratic systems. While platforms and consumption habits continue to evolve, the core responsibility remains the same: delivering accurate, fact-based reporting that informs the public. Local news organizations are central to this mission. As coverage declines in many communities, access to reliable […]
